Annual rings (also known as growth rings) are the result of secondary growth in woody plants, specifically trees. This process is driven by the activity of the vascular cambium, a layer of meristematic tissue.
Secondary growth increases the girth (thickness) of the stem. Each year, the vascular cambium produces new layers of secondary xylem (wood) towards the inside and secondary phloem towards the outside.
