"Identity vs. Role Confusion" is the fifth stage of Erik Erikson's Theory of Psychosocial Development, occurring during adolescence (approximately ages 12 to 18).
The Conflict: Teens need to develop a sense of self and personal identity. During this stage, they explore their independence and develop a sense of "who they are."
Success: Leads to the virtue of Fidelity—the ability to relate to others on the basis of who they are and stay true to themselves.
Failure: Results in "role confusion," where the individual is unsure about their place in society or their future path.
