The Kerala Teacher Eligibility Test (KTET) is a state-level examination conducted by the Kerala Pareeksha Bhavan for recruiting eligible candidates for teaching positions in schools across Kerala. KTET Category 3 English is focused on evaluating the English language proficiency of candidates who want to teach English at the upper primary school level (Classes 6 to 8). This category is intended for teachers who will be responsible for teaching English to young learners, and it tests a candidate’s ability to effectively communicate and teach the subject in a classroom setting.The exam is aimed at assessing the candidate's command over the English language, both in terms of pedagogical skills and subject knowledge. The test evaluates how well the candidate can teach English grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, and the ability to engage students with age-appropriate content.
To be eligible for KTET Category 3 as an English teacher (for classes 8 to 10), you need to fulfill the following educational qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) in English Language and Literature or a related subject with a minimum of 45% marks from a recognized university.(For SC/ST and differently-abled candidates, the minimum required marks are 40%.)
B.Ed. (Bachelor of Education) in English or a related subject recognized by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).Candidates who are in the final year of their B.Ed. programs can also apply for KTET Category 3, but they need to submit proof of completing the qualification during document verification.
Language Proficiency:
The KTET Category 3 exam tests both theoretical knowledge and practical application of English teaching skills. Candidates need to have a strong grasp of English grammar, vocabulary, and usage, as well as the ability to teach these skills to young learners in an engaging manner.
Pedagogical Skills:
Beyond just language proficiency, Category 3 also evaluates the candidate’s pedagogical approach to teaching English. This includes knowledge of lesson planning, teaching methods, and student engagement. The focus is on understanding how to teach English effectively to young learners, incorporating a range of teaching aids, resources, and classroom activities that can enhance language acquisition.
Child-Centered Approach:
As the test evaluates the skills of teachers working with children, a child-centered approach is emphasized. Candidates need to understand how to create a positive and supportive classroom environment for children of various learning abilities. This involves knowing how to differentiate instruction, handle classroom challenges, and promote inclusive education.
Knowledge of Curriculum and Syllabus:
Candidates must also be familiar with the Kerala State Curriculum and the syllabus for English in the upper primary classes. The exam assesses whether candidates can design lesson plans and activities in line with the state curriculum, ensuring they can effectively deliver English lessons based on the expected standards.
KTET Category III - English exam for 2025 is scheduled to take place on January 19, 2025. It will be conducted in the morning shift from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The KTET examination process includes offline, pen-and-paper tests to evaluate candidates aspiring to teach higher classes .The application process for KTET 2025 began on November 11, 2024, and the last date to apply was November 20, 2024. Admit cards will be available for download starting January 8, 2025
